I have been using Ubuntu for quite some time. Currently I am running Hardy and I have not faced any problems with USB devices. It works smoothly with no hassles. I connect my phone, digicam, MP3 player, portable HDD and they all work fine. They get auto-mounted. Yes, I agree that for adding anything from the repository you need the net. I second the anti-piracy drive. Only trouble is Wine does not run all windows apps that well. Which is why I have a dual-boot. For normal use Ubuntu is great.
